Friday Songs

This one is in heavy rotation. Love the lyrics. He gave us this one live with Keene on piano keys and it sounded good at the time, but the stripped-down album version comes across better I think. As for the album, I'm (mostly) loving side 1 (especially the first four songs, Serious Bird Woman I'm not sure about) , side 2 after Rhoda Rhoda has yet to kick in.

In honor of MK, some toe-tappin songs for a Friday courtesy of a British label called Catbird Records.

Tap Tap - On My Way
Pet Politics - The Ghost Mary & Her Friends

"and your jump shot too"

It is growing on me. Same old story: great sequencing and variety + short(ish) songs with unique/inspired changes of direction + interesting lyics = rewarding repeated listens. The first 8 songs (side 1) are solid. Nothing epic or classic GBV/Pollard, just solid and enjoyable. The end of the record (after Rhoda Rhoda) is coming into focus too...they are all solid songs too. This record doesn't hit the high points of Half Smiles, but it doesn't hit the low points of that record either.

I can hear the Abbey Road/Let It Bee in Serious Bird Woman, I Feel Gone Again, Gasoline Ragtime, and Top of My Game. Good call on the Love. I sense Westy in there too (Tomorrow Will Not...)

I emailed Merge and they sent me a free copy of the live cd Moon. I recommend doing the same, just say you bought Normal Happiness at Amoeba when it came out and they knew nothing about Moon. It is great. Game of Pricks in an arena sounds amazing.

Yes, they are Pac-10, solid 1-10...no not really, there is always an ASU in there, in this case maybe Guv'ner or Pipe. Sorry if there are any Guv'ner or Pipe fans out there.

I always tease Stacey about "her buddy Mac" who she got to meet and work with when Superchunk came to perform alongside a film at the Castro. She thought he was very nice. I think he's a pretty big hoops fan...there is a Merge comp whose tourney-inspired title is "Survive and Advance".

Rumors of next Pollard album will be a Kid Marine part II...he discovered some more photos of that mulleted ex-Marine and wrote accompanying songs...
